The Weirdest and Best Valentine’s Day Ever

I’ve had 25 separate Valentine’s Days. Most of them were meaningless and just meant that I would get candy to eat. But for the last 10 years, Valentine’s Day became a reminder that you were #foreveralone if you weren’t seeing someone. During high school and college, you let yourself feel bad if you didn’t have a special someone in February because the media and the world make a big deal out of it. Now I’m not trying to blame everyone else for how I let myself feel in the past. I believe we are in control of our feelings when it comes to silly things like that. However, now that it is in the past, I can look back and laugh at how incredibly ridiculous it is. A Hallmark holiday should not be responsible for making all the single people feel sad and lonely. If anything, I believe Valentine’s Day should just be about love in general. You just need to make sure to tell the special and important people in your life that you love them and you’re thankful for them. And yes, if you are lucky enough to be with someone, to make it about the love you share.

The last couple of years I have made a point not to let February 14th rule my entire month. I went out for sushi with my mom one year, and last year I went and saw Deadpool in theatres alone. It’s just a day – like any other.

This year was different. Because about 10 months ago, I met my best friend and the love of my life. As most of you may know by this point, I live here in the States and he lives in England. Having a “normal” couple’s Valentine’s Day was not really going to happen for us. And as I’ve stated above, I don’t think it needs to be a whole big deal anyway. No expensive gifts, just be with each other and remember the love we have – that’s all.

About a month ago, I suggested that we start a tradition of buying a ridiculous or inappropriate gift under $20 for Valentine’s Day, as we’re trying to save money, and we’re hilarious. I managed to find the weirdest thing possible on Amazon. And then I bought a silly card and professed my love inside of it.

There has to be some kind of romance, yeah?

As Valentine’s Day was a Tuesday this year, our date didn’t start until I got home from work. I walked up the two flights of stairs to the third floor that my apartment is on, and turned the corner to see this insanely ridiculous display waiting in front of my door. Needless to say, I immediately got tears in my eyes and then had to step back to take a picture.

I got inside and unwrapped the basket of flowers and yes, I cried more. Because I couldn’t believe how well my boyfriend knew me. I mean a whole bouquet and the ridiculous balloon? I am aware of how cheesy and silly it is, but I love attention, and this whole thing nailed it. And he hates that kind of stuff. See where I’m going with this? There is no further way to describe love than that. If you’ve experienced it, you know what I mean.

Anyway, I Facetimed him, we opened our bottles of Prosecco together and cheersed to our very first Valentine’s Day. We then opened our presents. As I opened the flowers already before I called him, I just had one other thing to open. It ended up being a Boomf box that pops out and gets confetti everywhere (this is his new favorite thing). It had all these cute and funny pictures of us. I love it.

And then I got him a Handitaur.

I am aware of how weird this is. And how weird it makes me look. And yet, I’m not that bothered.

The rest of the night was just full of smiles and laughter, exactly as it should be. Somehow, with the fact that we weren’t even physically together, it was still the best Valentine’s Day of my life. And that had everything to do with the person I could share it with – my best friend and the love of my life. I couldn’t have even planned anything better.

P.S. I also managed to send him a late Valentine’s gift – a Testicle Tea Bag. It’s a tea bag in the shape of a ball sack. Yes I am aware that this is also really weird. He found this absolutely hilarious – and that was the point. 😀
