I don’t know about the rest of you, but I love food. It is, in the end, my downfall. Because it’s extremely hard for me to say no to good tasting food. And unfortunately, the really good tasting food is generally not so good for you.
Which is why when I am eating healthy, it is my mission to find healthy food and snacks that genuinely taste really yummy. Otherwise, eating healthy would be horrible and I’d be miserable. And that’s just not the point of it all, is it?
Therefore, I decided to share some healthy snack ideas with you all that I think are really very scrumptious and are easy to find or make so that you have no excuses when you’re at work, out and about, or sitting at home chillin’ on the couch.
Or, you can just have raw almonds. It don’t matter. Although, I do think that roasted almonds have a much nicer flavour. And it gives it a bit more of a crunch.
I understand almonds can be expensive so you can buy raw almonds and roast them yourself to save a bit of money. And then your house will smell lovely. It’s a win win.
Also, nuts in general are just a great idea for a snack, if you’re not into almonds. There are some nuts that tend to be more fatty than others, but I’d say just don’t get the salted ones and minimise how much of them you eat and you’ll be fine.
You can buy “skinny” popcorn at the grocery store if you need a snack for work or if you’re going on a picnic. No matter if you’re in the UK or US, you can find something similar to this. Just be careful not to eat the entire bag, I have come close a few times..
Or if you’re at home and want it freshly popped, you can put some coconut oil in a saucepan, some popcorn kernals after that, pop it, add some salt, and drizzle a bit of butter. And there ya go! Although, you don’t have to put any butter on top, and you should limit the salt. I wouldn’t suggest omitting the salt. You need some salt. But just not too much, ya know what I mean?
Pro tip: I have actually popped my own popcorn before and put it into paper bags and shoved it in a bag before going to the cinema. That way, it’s a hell of a lot healthier than the cinema popcorn and much much cheaper. It worked perfectly!
If you don’t have enough time to make energy balls yourself, you can always find a health food store and buy some. The Bounce Cacao Mint ones are so good. They are made with all natural sugars, which is how I like my energy balls. They have other flavours but this one looked the most appetizing to me. They are a bit expensive, but I only buy a couple every once in while and it’s for time when I really don’t have anything else or any time to prepare anything. And it’s much better for you than buying a muffin or sausage roll.
If you do have the time to make your own energy balls ahead of time – and I would suggest that you make the time – there are thousands of recipes online. I’ve made quite a few different kinds but the Dirty Chai Energy Balls have been my favourite ones so far. They are not too sweet and can definitely satisfy a hunger craving.
I love fruit. There are not many days that have passed by where I haven’t had fruit at some point in the day.
For a quick snack, I usually gravitate towards apples, kiwi, strawberries, raspberries, and mango. In the summer time, I like to make fruit salads and fill it with bananas, oranges, apples, kiwi, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, pineapple, and mango. Unfortunately, it can go bad very quickly so you have to make sure you don’t make too much. I made one last night and gave some to D to take to work with him today and packed some for myself for lunch.
You can prepare fruit as a snack ahead of time or literally grab it anywhere you’re out if you’re hungry. Even McDonald’s has a little fruit bag for the kiddos. It’s all about making healthy choices. It is possible.
It can be a little hard to find healthy smoothies when you’re out. A lot of places add sugar and put in certain things in smoothies that completely defeats the purpose of getting one, in my opinion. Although, there are Naked juice and Innocent juice drinks you can get at the grocery store which tend to be pretty good. Always try to make sure there is no added sugar, and the only sugar you are getting is natural sugar from the fruits!
However, if you are home and you have a blender, you can have some fun. I always start my smoothies out with a base of greens, usually frozen spinach. I freeze it because then it lasts longer and blends easier.
My favourite go-to smoothie has:
- two handfuls spinach
- lime juice
- 2 kiwis
- small handful of strawberries
- half avocado
- heaping tablespoon of Tropeaka Vanilla Lean Protein Powder
- 1 teaspoon of Tropeaka Coconut Water Powder
- 1/2 teaspoon Spirulina
- few ice cubes
- some water
- add chia seeds after it’s been blended
I personally think this tastes really really good. Although, it did take me awhile to get accustomed to the spirulina flavour. I know it looks disgusting, and after posting a picture of it on my Instagram stories, I got a lot of comments about how “gross” it looked. But it is very sweet and does taste pretty good. Just play around with what you have in your fridge and freezer and try out new recipes!
Now there are tons of ideas for healthy snacks, but these are my main go-to items I choose on a daily basis. I always make sure I have these at home, and bring a few with me to work every day. I keep a jar full of mixed nuts on my desk for when I need a few and always bring in kiwi or apples and keep in the fridge. I try to make a smoothie every day for my morning snack, especially if I worked out that day. And popcorn is my go-to snack in the evenings.
It’s easy to make excuses and say you don’t “have time” but if you have time to grab a McDonald’s or a sausage roll, you definitely have the time to buy some fruit or grab an energy ball. It’s just about learning to make the conscious decision to eat healthy foods.
If you have any suggestions for healthy snacks that you think I should try, let me know in the comments below. And if you try out any of these ideas, let me know how it worked for you!
